is defined as the domination by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region.
There were 4 major causes of Imperialism thoroughout the world: Social Darwinism,Economic Interests, Political and Military Motives, and Humanitarian and Religious goals.
Social Darwinism Expands Throughout The World:
Westerners applied Darwin's ideas about natural selection and survival of the fittest to human sociteties. European races then thought that they were superior to oter races around the world. Imperial domination of other's way of improving the weaker races of human society. Many people were, in turn, robbed of their cultural heritage.
Economic Interests Expand:
Manufacturers wanted access to natural resources such as rubber, petroleum, manganese, and palm oil. They also discovered that there was many new markets of consumers to sell their products to.
Political and Military Motives:
Because of the economic stimulus, steam powered merchant ships and naval vessels needed coal and supplies in order to import and export goods. Military powers then had to gain access to islands and harbors for exports and to have more military control
Humanitarian and Religious Goals:
Missionaries, doctors, and colonial officers felt the need to spread education of medicines, laws, and Christian religion.
Europeans easily forced their rule upon countries of the world. As Europe grew stronger, older groups around the world were decreasing. Wars and the slave trade made Africa weaker and not strong enough to resist the European countries. Powers of Europe also had many advantages on their side. They hade strong economics, well-organized governments, and powerful armies and navies. Riverboats and telegraphs, as well as new medical knowledge were advanced technology that helped. The new medicines help prevent and treat against the deadly tropical diseases. Maxim machine guns, repeating rifles, and steam-driven warships also helped influence the people of Africa and Asia to not resist European imperialism.
There are many consequences to the European Imperialism including lasting negative and positive effects. The effects include economic, cultural, and ecological and are spread throughout the entire world. Some nations, such as those in eastern Asia, gained the needed structure for a well- off economic state; However, the countries of Africa have been destroyed by imperialism in their continent. A worldwide dependent economy with England at the center was formed. Europe became a strong political power because of the success of the imperialism. In the cultural aspect, there were many arguements formed about whom was superior to whom. Many civilizations were displaced in places located in Asia. Industrial development also destroyed many untouched enviornments and African people were seen as cheap labor and treated like slaves. In Africa, many illogical boundaries were drawn between countries. Many cultures and languages were exploited, and as a result, the worlds longest civil war began in the country of Uganda and still continues on today. The war is between the LRA (Lord's Resistance Army) run by Joseph Kony in the North and the leaders of Uganda in the South. The LRA constantly abducts children so they have to become child soldiers in the war. People are still fighting to release the hold that the LRA has on Uganda and its surrounding countries.
Through European Eyes:
The Europeans thought that by enforcing their rules, religion, and ideas onto the people of other continents, that they were making the world a better place by spreading their superior knowledge of things to other people. They were applying social darwinism to humans, and they thought that they were the superior ones. The inferior races of other continents, they felt, had to be corrected to make the world a better place to live. A British man once said, "In carrying out this work of civilization we are fulfilling what I believe to be our national mission, and we are finding scope for the exercise of those faculties and qualities which have made of us a great governing race." They thought what they were doing was for the good of everyone. Through Victim's Eyes:
The victim's had a totally different views of what happened during the imperialism period. They felt like they were being treated as inferior to the Europeans and that they were being exploited in every way possible. Africans felt robbed of their cultural heritage and did not appreciate the Europeans forcing their rule upon the continent of Africa. They felt as if they were being treated as slaves to the Europeans and that they were being destroyed culturally and economically by the Imperialism powers of Europe.
